Video may not show on mobile devices. Symphonion double-comb disk music box with five 10-5/8 disks (watch the video in the listing) serial #64467. Fabulous hard-to-find symphonion double-comb music box from the late 1800’s. In very good to excellent playing condition. All teeth in both combs are present and play well. Mechanism is in excellent condition. Measures approximately 13.5″ x 13.5″ x 7 tall.
Sousa: the liberty bell march (also used as the theme for monty python’s flying circus). Offenbach: march from the drum-major’s daughter (on the disk it says “march out of the daughter of the drummer”).
Von suppe: gallop from the light cavalry. Strauss: the annen polka (the anna polka). Symphonion was the first company to make disk music boxes. They were based in leipzig, germany. All teeth in both combs are present and in excellent shape. Case is in sound shape, with some wear to corners and near the handle of the winding lever. The decal on the top is about 50% present, and there are cracks, scratches, and gouges on the top. Nevertheless, the top is structurally sound. I believe there are places to get reproduction decals if you are interested in restoring this.
The beautiful inner paper label is in very good shape with the exception of a split where the top split. The photos show the interior of the box which shows evidence of age and could probably be polished or cleaned in some way. There is no musty smell at all. Mechanism winds well, although if you wind it close to the maximum, there is a bit of a clunk sound, so don’t overwind it.
Slow to start on occasion (5-10% of the time). I have not attempted to lubricate it. The mechanism begins to reduce in speed as it plays. This may be inherent in the music box or it may indicate a need for lubrication or regulation. The disks all play well.
There are a few small bends and there is discoloration. Currently in a smoke-free environment.
Heaven knows where it’s lived in the last 100 years. If you have specific packing preferences, please let me know and i will accomodate them. If there are significant additional costs to your requests, i may need to invoice to cover the additional costs. That is what we call “a felony”. Which one is best for you depends on your location and time frame. The photos constitute an integral part of my description. Some of the items i sell are antique or vintage. If you are new to purchasing vintage items, please understand that vintage items are just that: vintage. They are old, and often have been used.
Many people prefer their vintage items to have patina, so in general, i do not clean jewelry or other items that have patina. Again, please read my description carefully and study the photos. Be sure to add me to your favorites. I have a wide range of superb items of all types that i will be listing in the coming weeks.
If you do not do this, i reserve the right to relist the item and file a “non-paid” case. I will not understate the value of an item, nor will i say it is a gift.
