1800’s symphonion music box w/windup lever, 12 steel 8 discs, plays & needs work. Click to view image album. This symphonion music box has a wooden case with two brass hinges and a push in button that releases the locked lid. The base measures 10 1/8 inches square. The lid overhangs the base and measures 11 1/4 inches square.
In the front there is a brass wind up lever that winds the mainspring that makes the steel disc turn and play music. There is a problem with the mainspring.
It is broken next to the mainspring barrel. This lets the mainspring wind up but not all the way up to the end where you would be able to play more steel disc with each wind. A watch/clock repairman should be able to fix or replace the mainspring. I noticed when i was playing all the steel discs, a few times the machine didn’t want to start up after it was stopped. It would start after i wound up the mainspring to the end and it released some of the wind up.
Then i would continue winding up the mainspring and stop when the winding lever became hard to wind. The music box would play again.
After you wind up the mainspring several times, you will be able to tell when you should stop winding before it reaches the broken end. You will hear the mainspring releasing some of the wind if you continue to wind up the mainspring. On the left side of this music box you will see a short lever.
This will stop the disc from playing. I marked the stop and start spots with blue masking tape.
You might be better off to let the mainspring run down to the end when you are playing the music. The music that comes from the music box reminds me of music from the 1700’s.
If you look at the last picture, you will see there are two sets of combs that make the music. Below i list the songs that you will find on these twelve metal 8 inch discs. I put numbers on the discs with masking tape that correspond to the list below. The titles on the discs are in german, english and french. 1 – the mascott – la mascotte no.
