Antique Fat Cylinder Ducommun Girod Music Box, Operatic Songs (watch Video)

An outstanding example of a music box crafted during the “Golden Age of Music Boxes”. Boasting a finely spaced comb comprised of 144 teeth and a fat cylinder measuring 3.25 inches in diameter/10.25 inches long, this music box has fantastic complexity and tonal quality. The tonal quality is what I would call ” a sweet” sounding music box which is what you want. Restoring an antique music box to superb playing condition typically costs more than the actual music box itself so when you find a fine example (like this one) that plays exceptionally well and with fantastic songs, you are ahead of the game. This is a “no apologies” antique music box. This was crafted by Ducommun Girod and bears the serial number 18483 – indicating a crafting date of 1842/1843. Ducummon Girod, along with the Nicole and LeCoultre families are widely regarded as the top three antique music box makers. This antique music box plays exceptionally well. The pleasing musical arrangement has wonderful bass notes, bright treble notes all the while maintaining sweet sound – not harsh at all. The song selection is a combination of well arranged operatic and Irish tunes. As of today, I know four of the eight songs. This fat cylinder music box is referred to as a “two-per-turn”, meaning the cylinder plays two songs on one complete revolution. I fully serviced the movement, including the dampers and polished the brass so everything works perfectly and it looks fantastic once again. Any mechanical movement requires such attention. This music box was restored approximately 30 years ago. Antique music boxes typically cost more to achieve proper musical playing condition than the piece itself cost. When you find one that plays extremely well like this one does, you are ahead of the game cost wise. Mechanical and musical/tonal condition is excellent as the video demonstrates. The case naturally shows signs of use and age. The case measures approximately 18 x 8.5 x 6.25 inches. Plays the following songs (if anyone knows the unknown tunes, kindly send me a message). Rory O’More or also known as Haste to the Wedding. Where the Bee Sucks, There Lurk I by Thomas Arne “from Shakespeare’s Tempest”. Perchè non posso odiarti. Woodsman Spare That Oak by Henry Russell. The words are from the poem of the same name by George Pope Morris. HEAR IT PLAY ALL EIGHT SONGS. YouTube videos never do a music box justice and they always sound richer in person. PLEASE EXPLORE MY OTHER LISTINGS. CONSULTATIONS ARE FREE AS I ENJOY SHARING WHAT I KNOW. Troy Duncan, CPA, retired. The item “ANTIQUE FAT CYLINDER DUCOMMUN GIROD MUSIC BOX, OPERATIC SONGS (WATCH VIDEO)” is in sale since Friday, November 11, 2016. Antique Victorian Ducommun Girod Swiss Cylinder Music Box Ca 1840

ANTIQUE VICTORIAN DUCOMMUN GIROD SWISS CYLINDER MUSIC BOX CA: 1840! Hear how excellent it sounds right now! Many long time music box experts claim that the Ducommun box was the finest and most desired make to own and I must say that they are very excellent and render a most beautiful tone when it is played. This one is no exception. All 6 melodies are mesmerizing and to listen to a piece play that is around 175 years old is alone a great treat! The case is solid mahogany, the bedplate is solid brass, the 3 controls are all on the lower left, and it is wound with a large winding key that is original to the box. The comb is complete and perfect with all original teeth. Also, the original paper tune card is completely intact and very legible. The case measures 17 1/2″ long and it has the earliest “hook & eye lid closer which is characteristic of early pre-Civil War boxes. One would be surprised at how heavy it is. Excellent volume of music when played. After fully winding it up, the piece will play for several minutes and go through all of the tunes 2 or 3 times. More sounds files are available upon request. Other areas enquire first. If you can’t hear it play or want to hear another selection, just give me a call from the number below.
