Make sure to check out my other auctions after you look at this one. I’m listing an eclectic collection of mechanical, technological and musical antiques, and I suspect there will be something to interest just about everyone. Here’s a gorgeous, exceedingly rare Style 30A disc music box manufactured by Symphonium in the late 1890’s and documented by David Bowers on page 223 of The Encyclopedia of Automatic Music Instruments. The music box uses Symphonium’s propietary no. 30 discs, eleven of which are included with the instrument. Condition is exceptionally nice, especially given its age. There’s some flaking to the reverse-painted glass artwork on the underside of the lid, and a small area of rough wood on the back rear corner of the lid (see pics), but the instrument is otherwise in near mint condition throughout, with a pristine original cabinet finish and a beautiful burl walnut cabinet whose exquisitely crafted brass fittings and heavily carved corner columns distinguish it from almost every other music box cabinet ever made. Moreover, the unique Symphonium “sublime harmonie” double-comb mechanism is almost like new, with no rust, no corrosion, not even any significant tarnish. All teeth on the combs are perfect, and the music box sounds wonderful when it’s playing. This is an extremely nice, wonderfully maintained music box, and I’m confident the new owner will be pleased. Measures approximately 22″ wide by 18″ deep by 11 high (with lid closed). Sure, you can probably get a lower price from Joe and Janet Barn-Find, but when your “bargain” arrives broken, and without any hint of how it works or how you might be able to put it back together, you’ll realize that you really do get exactly what you pay for. That’s about it. The item “Large, Stunning 1898 Symphonium Style 30A Victorian Disc Music Box Burl Walnut” is in sale since Sunday, February 14, 2016.
