Make sure to check out all of my auctions after you look at this one. I’m listing an eclectic assortment of mechanical, technological and musical antiques, and I suspect there will be something of interest to just about everyone. Here’s a 115+ year old Charles Paillard lever-wind cylinder music box with an 11 nickel-plated cylinder, a beautiful nickel-plated mechanism and an original comb that has no missing or broken teeth. Plays 8 airs, including Here Comes The Bride. The spring is strong, the governor is quiet, the parts are clean, and the mechanism seem to be working properly, including the advance, which moves the cylinder ahead one air at at at time. Like most high end Paillard mechanisms, the mechanism on this box is exquisite. Difficult to top in terms of either its nickel finish, its excellent build quality or its ornate detail. Notes are loud and resonant, but you can hear a bit of squeaking as the cylinder rotates, suggesting that the dampers need to be adjusted. I don’t know how to do this, and I suspect that if I tried to do it, I’d make the situation worse rather than better. Mahogany cabinet is in decent shape, with its original finish intact. No warp in the lid, which lays flat when the box is closed. Wear to the decorations on the front, but the inlays on top of the lid are excellent, as you can see. Tune card is an older replica, but I believe it’s the correct style for this box. Glass is clear and undamaged. Black enamel is in nice shape, with no flaking or deterioration. Measures approximately 25″ x 12″ x 9. That’s about it. The item “1890’s Paillard 25 Antique Swiss Cylinder Music Box withStunning Nickel Mechanism” is in sale since Sunday, January 17, 2016.
