NICOLE 3-Air OVERTURE MUSIC BOX. We have recently acquired this from an important collection. As you may know, overture music boxes represent the pinnacle of desirability for music box collectors, and early pieces such as this are extremely rare…. And this one is signed by Francois Nicole, considered by many to be the “father” of fine music boxes. His firm, started in 1810, Nicole Freres, made the finest of the finest, and his imprint means that he himself designed and tuned the comb, the most important part of any music box. What a work of art the comb is, indeed, with teeth spacing of about 14 per inch. Inlaid rosewood case 15″ long x 7″deep x 7″ high (when closed) and 14″ high (open). 10.5″ x 3″ brass cylinder. Bedplate signed by Francois Nicole. Serial # 11861 (dates to 1830). 143 comb teeth, none broken. You will note that there are four (4) selections indicated on the tune sheet. This is because the last tune is divided into two parts, playing consecutively on one turn of the cylinder. Normally, music boxes of this era were made with simple fruitwood, quite ugly in fact. Sometime in the past, it has been re-cased to a more attractive design. The serial number is indicated on the bottom of the case, an indication that this may have been done either at the Nicole factory or perhaps the Baud Museum Workshop in L’Auberson, who have been in the business of music box repair and restoration for many, many years. Everything is in perfect shape, no broken teeth, no damper noise, and playing well in tune. True musical treasure, a museum piece for sure! NO CHARGE for packing & crating – we do it all, properly, at no cost to you! Musical Treasures of Miami. 2940 West Lake Vista Circle, Davie, FL 33328. Antique Music Boxes – Clocks – Phonographs.
