Items are non-returnable unless grossly misrepresented. This is a great venue for all of us, let’s be kind and honest!! Did you read my notes above? Another one of a kind from my collection, a c. 1817 Georgian era miniature music box pendant. This remarkable little piece of wind-up automation was created in Switzerland, and the spring inside is actually signed and dated 1817, making this one of the first music boxes created (per the restorer). The enameled front is an intricate little still life of musical instruments, with little robins egg blue and burgundy enamel highlights on the very fine goldwork border. The stem is a sturdy and solid thing, made for firm twisting to wind up the mechanism. Next to the stem is a small’owl’ hallmark, the mark used by 18K gold items imported into France. So this was made in Switzerland and imported into France about 200 years ago, roughly. It has it’s original little chain to hang off the finger or necklace. I had the jump ring added myself to accommodate my chain. It is a stunning and rare little toy! I didn’t think to ask for photos of the interior when it was open and unless you are THE most skilled workman, I recommend never opening this. It was restored to repair some of the working bits of the music box as well as the back cover…. Which took a VERY, VERY long time. It had somewhat been flattened enough to keep the music box from running properly. It has been reshaped and reattached CAREFULLY as to not impede the movement inside. The music plays for quite a long time when fully wound. The restorer said it cannot be “overwound”, like wrist watches, due to the type of spring used. There is a black mark (removable with alcohol wipe) on the back marking the On/Off switch. That feature does not work; when you wind it, it plays until it’s done. The sound is soft but completely audible. These were placed on a wooden surface, like a desk, and the wood enhances the volume! There is a tiny hole in the back cover which allows the sound out. It must be held from the sides to wind it, not pinched front to back. It weighs about 22 grams, a good portion of which is music box. It will not be left up or relisted, so if you are a collector of fine rare jewelry or automata, please contact me before it’s gone!
