36942 by Paillard of Zurich Switzerland. The case is artfully made of what appears to be rosewood, walnut, and/or mahogany. Its lid and front have several rows of thin Marquetry banding around the perimeter. At the center of the lid is a lovely design of floral and foliage marquetry of varying woods, and lid border is offset with dark wood banding. The box is approximately 19.5″ wide, 8.5″ deep and 6″ high with a footprint of 19.75″ by 8.75. It has a hinged lid opening to an ebonized interior. On front of the case is a diamond shaped escutcheon and also, sadly, a fading inlaid scroll motif. As would be expected of a piece of this age, there is some wear in evidence: none of which, however, takes away from its elegant beauty. The interior mechanism is protected by a wood-framed glass door. To the right of the enclosed movement are two levers… One for START/STOP and one for CHANGE/REPEAT – both in good working order. To the left of the enclosed movement is a ratchet-assisted winding lever – also in good working condition.. Inside the hinged case is the brass cylinder, 10 7/8 in length; pins appear to be intact. The comb has no missing teeth and a harp-shaped damascened zither attached – all fully functioning. The lyre-form tune indicator on the left works – as its’ moves are coordinated with tune changes. To the right of the cylinder is a brass, butterfly-wing governor [working]. There is some evidence of superficial rust and entire mechanism would surely benefit from a thorough professional cleaning – which would only serve to improve its enchanting tone. [We do not feel qualified for this; nor do we have easy access to such a service] Tune sheet, nailed to interior, appears to be original. It shows some signs of wear: slight tears and very small sections missing in upper corners [see last pic] but all writing is complete and legible… Inasmuch as one is able to read/decipher such script. Tune sheet lists eight popular operatic and/or dance airs which are listed as follows [and this is where my own eyes may tell on me] : 1 Erminie G[J]akobowski est. 1834 2 The Gypsie Baron Strauss est. 1885 3 The Mountain Stream??? 4 Rigoletto Verdi est. A Dream of Love Liszt? 6 Fre[i]y Schulz Weber 1817-21 7 Lohengrin [Bridal chorus] Wagner est. 1850 8 The Black Hussar Millöcker est. 1884 This music box was made by well-known Paillard of Ste. Croix, Switzerland, who has the reputation for producing quality instruments with the highest standards of craftsmanship. Based on its number and dating of tunes, it is said to have been made circa 1886. This lovely music box is in good playing condition and with a bit of TLC, would continue to provide exquisite classical music for centuries to come.
