ANTIQUE GERMAN SYMPHONIUM MUSIC BOX MOVEMENTGramophone Phonograph Record Player

Antique german symphonium music box movement:gramophone phonograph record player. The movement will play the two (2) disks that are included, but due the the bends in the disks, it cannot play for long without getting stuck. Without a disk, the movement works fine and without sticking. Main spring is in excellent strong condition. There were many variations of large music machines, usually built for the affluent of the pre-phonograph 19th century.
Some were called the symphonium. Others were called the concert regina music box machine. Both variations were as tall as a grandfather clock and both used interchangeable large disks to play different sets of tunes. Both were spring-wound and driven and both had a bell-like sound. The machines were often made in england, italy, and america, with additional disks made in switzerland, austria, and prussia. A coin (usa 25ยข) or a ruler (6/15cm) may be included in the photos above for scale purposes. Used to play punched metal disk records. Operates by a hand-crank and swing-driven movement.

Made of various metals, but mostly brass. The movement itself is in perfect working, but restored, condition.

Movement has been partially-restored from a very degraded state. Some iron parts are rust pitted, but brass pieces have been perfectly cleaned. Original wooden box is not present, but the movement has been mounted on a pair of temporary legs to repair it. The legs are unstable and one screw is missing. The regulator movement was replaced with one for another wind-up gramophone, so i was told by the shop owner of the bazaar i bought the movement in.

All parts are in good, cleaned condition. The bedplate is the relatively heavy metal foundation on which all the other pieces are fastened, usually by screws. The ratchet lever or the windup key is used to put the spring motor under tension, that is to wind it up. The spring motor or motors (two or more can be used to make playing times longer) give anywhere from a few minutes to an hour or more of playing time. The comb is a flat piece of metal with dozens or even hundreds of tuned teeth of different lengths. About 12 inches (30cm) wide and very heavy (about 12 pounds/6 kilograms).
